Assessment and treatment of eating disorders: Digesting the facts
Kristene A. Doyle, Ph.D.
There is no discrimination of eating disorders on the basis of sex, age, or race. Eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge-Eating Disorder are found across all age groups and gender, as well as races and ethnic backgrounds globally. This workshop will teach participants the core underlying mechanisms that maintain eating disorders. Assessment strategies and a review of important terminology will be addressed.
Common obstacles in the treatment of eating disorders will be discussed. Clinical interventions to disengage from the underlying mechanisms which lock patients into an eating disorder mindset will be reviewed. Interventions for reducing weight-checking, shape-checking, comparison-making, performance checking, and expanding clients’ concept of self-worth beyond appearance and weight will be emphasized.
Participants will learn the main irrational beliefs and cognitive distortions held in patients with eating disorders, including global evaluations of self-worth and frustration intolerance, and will be taught evidence-based behavioural and cognitive restructuring strategies to develop healthier, more adaptive beliefs such as Unconditional Self-Acceptance and High Frustration Tolerance. A video demonstrating treatment of bulimia nervosa will be shown with a discussion following.
Certificate: Participants will receive a letter of participation signed by Kristene Doyle PhD, director of Albert Ellis Institute, New York and this shall be issued by the Albert Ellis Institute itself.
